RESUMO

The objective was to determine the validity of the UWES-3, an ultrashort measure of work engagement lacking evidence in Hispanic populations. In total, 200 workers with heterogeneous positions and careers from Metropolitan Lima were enrolled via nonprobabilistic sampling. The UWES-3 and measures of external variables (work accidents, stress overload, and others) were used. Data were collected through a web platform. Items were analysed, nonparametric response theory methods (Mokken scale analysis and Ramsay curves) were applied to the items, and ordinal and linear regression were used to determine the relationships with external variables. The items had statistically similar distributional properties and monotonic associations with external variables but with fewer functional response options. The UWES-3 complied with the monotonic homogeneity model and invariant ordering of items; the scaling of the items, score (greater than 0.80), and reliability (0.94) were high. With the effects of age and sex controlled, the UWES-3 significantly predicted minor accidents at work and job satisfaction and revealed effects of stress overload and perceived efficacy. The theoretical implications of the UWES-3 as a brief unidimensional measure integrating the three original dimensions of the instrument and the practical implications of its use for research and professional practice are discussed.

This study aims to show an intervention developed within the scope of the Worker's Health Reference Centre in Diadema. We analysed municipal health network reports of occupational accidents with adolescents from 2009 to 2019 to assess intersectoral strategies and the implemented surveillance and prevention actions. Notifiable Diseases Information System, technical reports from surveillance, and records of our team's meetings and events of were analyzed. Of the 5,179 reported serious work accidents, 7.5% affected young people aged between 14 and 17 years, 72% of which were boys and 28%, girls. Intersectoral discussion and a matrix health support favoured a broader understanding of the phenomenon. We found difficulties of healthcare providers in identifying work accidents and parents' denial about adverse working conditions. We expect to overcome the invisibility and underreporting of child labour and contribute to the application of principles of precaution and prevention to build protective paradigms for children and their working families to combat child labour

RESUMO

(1) Background: accident rates prove the uneven development of the member countries in the area of work safety. Remedial actions and structural programmes should take into account, e.g., the level of work safety in all European Union (EU) countries. Aim: the identification of differences in the level of work safety in the production sector of EU countries, especially the so-called "old" and "new" EU countries. (2) Methods: for each country UE (in 2008-2018), the relative risk (RR) of an accident at work was determined and a comparative analysis was conducted. (3) Results: an increase in the RR of an accident at work was observed along with an increase in the GDP of a given country. It was found that the level of occupational safety in Sweden and the United Kingdom is higher than in other countries, and lower in Spain and Portugal. In the three largest economies of the EU, Germany, France, and Italy, the RR of the accident in the industrial sector in relation to the national data is one of the lowest in the entire EU, not exceeding 1.3. In The Netherlands, an increase of 1.7 RR of fatal accidents in the industrial sector was observed between 2008 and 2018. (4) Conclusions: RR in the manufacturing sector of the so-called "old" EU is higher than in the so-called "new" EU, which may result from the implementation of Industry 4.0 assumptions in the "old" EU. The presented results and conclusions may be useful in shaping the EU policy in the field of sustainable development of production sectors of individual member countries.

RESUMO

The aim of this research was to study the impact of the unitary prevention delegates (UPDs) on the Spanish working environment. To this end, a cross-sectional study was carried out using microdata from the National Survey on Health and Safety Management in Companies (ENGE-2009) with a sample of 5147 work centres. To measure the relationship between the presence of UPD in workplaces with preventive management indicators and damage to health, individual and multiple logistic regression models were carried out, calculating the crude (cOR) and adjusted (aOR) odds ratios by sociodemographic covariates, with their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Ambivalent results were obtained. On the one hand, a positive impact of the UPDs was found, in the management of prevention showing a higher probability of prevention plans being carried out (aOR = 3.97; 95% CI: 3.26-4.83), risk assessments (aOR = 5.96; 95% CI: 4.44-8.01) and preventive actions were planned (aOR = 3.01; 95% CI: 2.55-3.56), as well as 1.56 times less likely to register minor occupational accidents (aOR = 0.64; 95% CI: 0.53-0.76). On the other hand, the presence of the UPDs did not promote the activation of a participatory culture and did not reduce the probability of suffering serious and fatal accidents at work. In conclusion, UPDs need to activate workers' participation to improve results.

Introduction: In the practical scenario of teaching-learning, Nursing academics have contact with biological agents for performing their activities in circumstances similar to professional practice, being fundamental to expand the knowledge about precautionary measuresstandard and biosafety. Objective: To compare the knowledge about risk practices, types of exposure and immediate care after the accident with biological material among academics of the 4th grade of Nursing. Method: Descriptive, cross-sectional study, with quantitative analysis, developed in two Higher Education Institutions in the interior of the state of São Paulo, one private and the other public. Results: The data reveal that academics have more than 88% knowledge about diseases that can be transmitted after exposure to biological material. There was no statistical significance in the knowledge of academics regarding the activities of risk during the care practice: reincarnation of a needle, inappropriate perfunctory disposal, venous puncture, perfunctory discharge in a black bag, administration of drug IV, drug administration IM, drug administration SC. However, for risk activities such as: washing of dirty/contaminated material (p=0.0572), arterial puncture (p=0.0572) and drug administration ID (p=0.0572) there was statistical significance. As for immediate care after exposure, there was no statistical significance between immediate care. Conclusion: We were able to verify that the knowledge of the academics of the private and public IES, referring to the contagion of HIV, hepatitis B and C and risk practice did not present statistical significance. Regarding the types of exposure and immediate care the knowledge is insufficient. Contributions and implications: The study demonstrated the need to expand and strengthen teaching on the risks to which health professionals are exposed, since their formation. It is necessary to develop strategies by educational institutions, so that the risks inherent to the care process are minimized in all its care practice.(AU)

In the last few decades, the labor process in the Brazilian agricultural sector underwent important transformations. These changes, triggered to a great extent by the insertion of technology and mechanization of stages of the productive process, imposed new dynamics to labor in sugarcane fields, articulating old forms of organization and working conditions with the imperatives of mechanization. In this context, situations of susceptibility to the occurrence of accidents and different health problems that are quite present in the daily life of labor in sugarcane have been renewed. Exposure to pesticides, new practices of sugarcane burning, as well as the handling of machines and working tools in a context of increased productivity and intensification of work exemplify this situation. This article analyzes such labor conditions and situations, as well as the circumstances of occurrences of typical accidents and diseases resulting from labor relations in the sugarcane agribusiness segment of the Araraquara (SP) region. The considerations developed here are supported by field research developed between 2013 and 2014. Fourteen workers were interviewed, which allowed to understand the different articulations between the life stories of these men and women and the daily work in the cane fields. The data obtained indicate that the pace and intense working hours associated to lack of protective equipment, exposure to pesticides and other risks present in rural areas are the basis for the occurrence of accidents, marks of the expansion of exploration and precariousness with the advancement of neoliberal measures.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and incidence of accidents with biological material, the level of knowledge, and compliance to standard precautions (SPs) among dentists, physicians, nurses, and dental and medical students. METHODS: A closed cohort study with a prospective and retrospective component was conducted between August 2014 and September 2015. The participants were contacted in two moments during the follow-up period, during which a structured questionnaire divided into six sections was used; the interviews were conducted during the follow-up period (Month 6) and at the end of the observation period (Month 12). RESULTS: The global prevalence of accidents in the previous 12 months was 10.2%, with a difference between professionals and students (13.0% vs. 5.1%, respectively; p < 0.003). The incidence rate was 6.49 per 100 person/year, with difference between the groups (6.09 per 100 person/year in professionals and 7.26 per 100 person/year in students), type of specialization (hazard ratio, 3.27), and hours worked per week (hazard ratio, 2.27). The mean of compliance to SP was 31.99 (±3.85) points, with a median of 33 (30, 35) points against the expected 27.75 points. Adherence to SP was associated with the accident report (p < 0.020). CONCLUSION: We conclude that the proportion/incidence rate of accidents with biological material was high in relation to that in the literature, being higher in professionals and especially among physicians. The levels of knowledge and adherence to SP were good, with the best found in dentists and dental students.

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the association between job satisfaction and accidents at work among nursing professionals in the hospital area in the interior of Minas Gerais. This was a descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, with data collected in 2018. Data collection was used to characterize the workers and the Job Satisfaction Questionnaire S20 / 23, validated to Brazil. Statistical tests were applied. It was evident that of the 451 participants in this study, the majority were nursing technicians, female, between the ages of 19 and 39, married / companions, without children, Catholics, working in the morning, in the wards of hospitalization, fulfilling 36 hours a week, with up to 5 years of training and performance in the hospital and family income between a salary and a half to three minimum salaries, this being his only job. These amounts corresponded to R$ 1431.00 to R$ 2862.00 on the date of collection. A minority has been injured in the last twelve months, and this occurred mainly in the afternoon. In general, the workers reported the accidents and reported their bosses to them; the main type of accident was "with body fluids", followed by those with sharp objects, being the lack of attention of third parties and training, the reasons for these occurrences. Most of the accident victims did not leave nor had sequels due to these accidents. The average satisfaction of nursing workers was high, and the Inner Work Satisfaction and Physical Environment dimensions were the most relevant, followed by Satisfaction with Hierarchical Relationships, demonstrating the considerable job satisfaction of nursing professionals. There was a significant association between Accidents at work and nursing profession time and the time spent in the hospital. There was an association between job satisfaction and the Catholic religion, the existence of children, the professional category of nurses and specialized sectors such as Intensive Care Unit, Hemodialysis and Surgical Center. The association between satisfaction and occurrence of an occupational accident has not been proven. Identifying actions that promote satisfaction in hospital work can positively influence the final quality of care offered by nursing workers, productivity and physical and mental health of these people

The number of traffic accidents involving motorcycles is increasing, this exposes motorcycle taxi drivers to work accidents. This study aims to estimate the incidence of accidents at work among motorcycle taxi drivers and factors associated with these problems according to sociodemographic characteristics, professional characteristics, working conditions and the presence of musculoskeletal symptoms. It is a cross-sectional study of analytical character with sample composed of 123 registered motorcycle taxi drivers at the Associação de Mototaxistas de Jequié (77.8 response rate). For statistical analysis, we used the logistic regression technique, with calculation of incidence ratio, confidence interval (95%), and p ≤ 0.05 significance level. The annual incidence of work accidents with motorcycle taxi drivers was 26.8%. A significant incidence of accidents was observed among those who reported having another remunerated activity in addition to the taxi service (86.7%), with statistically significant association (p = 0.03). The performance of two professions seem to predispose the motorcycle taxi drivers to more of accidents with the vehicle and is considered an important public health problem.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Latent errors in an incident reporting system pose threats to accident and near-miss prevention in hospitals. The aims of this study were to gain insight into the incident reporting system by exploring and investigating the refinement of unreported and under-reported (near-miss) patterns and by estimating under-reported annual hospital accidents over three months in one hospital. METHODS: Sequential mixed-method research was undertaken using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. 120 health care providers were selected from 13 departments of a selected study hospital. Self-reported questionnaires, information from annual reports and focus group interviews among stakeholders were employed. Based on a quantitative mixed-model approach, estimation of lost cases from near-miss incidents was made. RESULTS: In 2015, 20% of accidents had been reported to the hospital center while under-reported accidents and near-miss incidents by self-report over 3 months equaled 18% and 25.9%, respectively. Recent trends were positive, driven by changing values about incident reporting. However, confusion and fear still remain among practitioners about near-miss reporting due to old beliefs. This study confirms that incident reporting needs improvement so that there is an enhanced organizational culture of safety, raised awareness for individual reporting, and recovery of lost cases using mixed-model estimation of near-misses.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have shown that patient transfer is a risk factor for back pain, back injuries and long term sickness absence, whereas consistent use of assistive devices during patient transfer seems to be protective. While classical ergonomic interventions based on education and training in lifting and transferring techniques have not proven to be effective in preventing back pain, participatory ergonomics, that is meant to engage and motivate the involved parties while at the same time making the intervention maximally relevant, may represent a better solution. However, these findings are largely based on uncontrolled studies and thus lack to be confirmed by studies with better study designs. In this article, we present the design of a study which aims to evaluate the effect and process of a participatory organizational intervention for improved use of assistive devices. METHODS: The study was performed as a cluster randomized controlled trial. We recruited 27 departments (clusters) from five hospitals in Denmark to participate in the study. Prior to randomization, interviews, observations and questionnaire answers (baseline questionnaire) were collected to gain knowledge of barriers and potential solutions for better use of assistive devices. In April 2016, the 27 departments were randomly allocated using a random numbers table to a participatory intervention (14 clusters, 324 healthcare workers) or a control group (13 clusters, 318 healthcare workers). The participatory intervention will consist of workshops with leaders and selected healthcare workers of each department. Workshop participants will be asked to discuss the identified barriers, develop solutions for increasing the use of assistive devices and implement them in their department. Use of assistive devices (using digital counters -, primary outcome, and accelerometers and questionnaire - secondary outcome), perceived physical exertion during patient transfer, pain intensity in the lower back, occurrence of work-related back injuries during patient transfer, organizational readiness to change, knowledge on how to perform proper patient transfer, social capital and work ability (secondary outcomes) were assessed at baseline and will also be assessed at 1 year follow-up. Process evaluation will be based on qualitative and quantitative data to assess the implementation, the change process, and the impact of context aspects. DISCUSSION: The study will evaluate the effect and process of a participatory intervention on improving the use of assistive devices for patient transfer among hospital healthcare workers. By using cluster-randomization, as well as process- and effect evaluation based on objective measures we will contribute to the evidence base of a promising intervention approach. RESUMO

Allometry is the knowledge concerning relations between the features of some beings, like animals, or cities. For example, the daily energy rate is proportional to a mass of mammals rise of 3/4. This way of thinking has spread quickly from biology to many areas of research concerned with sociotechnical systems. It was revealed that the number of innovations, patents or heavy crimes rises as social interaction increases in a bigger city, while other urban indexes such as suicides decrease with social interaction. Enterprise is also a sociotechnical system, where social interaction and accidents at work take place. Therefore, do these interactions increase the number of accidents at work or, on the contrary, are they reduction-driving components? This article tries to catch such links and assess the allometric exponent between the number of accidents at work and the number of employees in an enterprise.

RESUMO

Peru is a country located on the Pacific coast of South America with a population of more than 30 million inhabitants. In the past 10 years, Peru has had a steady economic growth. Peru is predominantly an extractive industry country, but the manufacturing and construction sectors are booming. It is in this context that regulations have been implemented to protect the safety and health of workers. One of the most important regulations is the Law on Safety and Health at Work, which has been recently promulgated. Regulations are complemented by training and education in occupational safety and health. The measures are yet to be fully implemented thus a positive effect in reducing accidents and occupational diseases at work has not yet been seen.

The primary objective of this study was to describe the injury characteristics and demographics of patients injured during woodworking activities, upon their arrival to the emergency department in a regional of France where this industry is prevalent. The secondary objective was to compare patient and injury characteristics for work-related and hobby-related accidents. A cohort of 87 patients who had suffered a woodworking accident over a two-year period was evaluated; 79 were available for follow-up. The context and circumstances of the accident, nature and location of the injuries and patient demographics were recorded. Hobby-related accidents accounted for two-thirds of the accidents (51/79). Most of the injured workers were either loggers (35%) or carpenters (46%). The hand was injured in 53 cases (67%). Work-related accidents resulted in significantly more serious consequences in terms of hospital stay, work stoppage, resumption of work or retraining than hobby-related accidents. For the workplace accidents, 86% occurred on new machines; more than 25% of the machines involved in accidents at home were over 15 years. Sixty-eight per cent of workers were wearing their safety gear, while only 31% of those injured during recreational woodworking wore the appropriate gear. Several elements of prevention should be improved: information about the need to maintain the equipment, protect the worker with suitable clothing, and learn which maneuvers are considered hazardous. Safety gear should be regularly inspected in the workplace.
